JANET Certificate Service Overview
Background
A Server Certificate consists of a public key, an identity in terms of a DNS name, and the digital signature of the organisation that has checked the ownership of the public key and the identity which it links to. This provides the user with some assurance of the identity of the server they are visiting: for example, to view a web site.
A factsheet on using server certificates is available from:

JANET(UK) and Server Certificates
JANET(UK) has offered a Certificate Service since 30 November 2006 when it was launched in parallel with the UK Access Management Federation. At present no charge is made to eligible organisations who apply for Server Certificates.
The JANET Certificate Service Eligibility Policy is available at:

The Terms and Conditions of the service can be viewed at:

Certificates issued by the JANET Certificate Service can only be used for non-commercial purposes and therefore may not be used to secure financial transactions.
The JANET Certificate Service
Following a procurement undertaken by TERENA [Trans-European Research and Education Networking Association] on behalf of the European National Research and Education Networks, JANET(UK) has undertaken a new agreement whereby certificates will be issued via Comodo CA. Under the new service, JANET(UK) will deploy a new web-based certificate administration system which will provide an improvement in the time between a certificate request and its delivery. The system will also provide subscriber organisations with greater control and better visibility of the certificates issued.
