The JANET Certificate Service offers a range of features. Through a simple online interface it enables the automated processing of certificate requests, for all .ac.uk and gov.uk domains, along with the ability to monitor and manage new certificates that are issued. This includes certificate revocations and automated alerts when certificates are close to their expiry date. The online interface also allows federated access for nominated contacts. JANET(UK) will continue to absorb the costs of providing this service to its customers.

JANET(UK) is also pleased to be able to announce that all GlobalSign certificates, issued as part of the original JANET Server Certificate Service, will continue to be valid for their stated lifespan. This means that organisations in possession of certificates, issued as part of the original service, will not need to replace these certificates by April 2010.

Financial Transactions

In order to obtain server certificates that support financial transactions, JANET connected organisations are able to purchase Extended Validation (EV) certificates from Comodo CA at the discounted price of $150 (US Dollars) per annum. These requests will be processed by Comodo directly and thus require no involvement from JANET(UK).

Wildcard Certificates

JANET(UK) has taken the conscious decision not to support wildcard certificates as part of this service for the following reasons:

• Security: If one server or sub-domain is compromised, all sub-domains may be compromised;
• Management: If the wildcard certificate needs to be revoked, all sub-domains will need a new certificate;
• Compatibility: Wildcard certificates may not work seamlessly with older server-client configurations.
