Schools Services

JANET(UK) operates JANET, the UK's education and research network. We interconnect the local authorities in England (directly and via their Regional Broadband Consortia), Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, providing the core of the schools National Education Network (NEN).

Schools connect via their local authority or RBC. In this way, local authorities and their schools are users of the wider JANET network that connects all UK colleges, universities and research institutions to the rest of the World.

JANET(UK) also provides a number of national services for its customers. For instance, the JANET Videoconferencing Service (JVCS) is available directly to all schools.

The use of the JANET network and services by local authorities and their schools is funded centrally by Becta, C2K (Northern Ireland), LTS (Scotland) and DCELLS (Wales). Other educational and related UK organisations, including independent schools, museums, galleries and other educational content providers, are eligible to purchase a JANET connection and services.

The NEN Services Group within JANET(UK) focuses on three areas, underpinned by international technical standards: Videoconferencing, Content, Connectivity.
