Research Community
The JANET network has its origins in the Research Council and other Networks which were brought together to form the national infrastructure in 1984, and the Research sector continues to be a major user community on JANET and provides a strong drive for development and evolution of the network through its large projects and involvement in global collaborations linked to international facilities.
JANET provides a high-quality, high-capacity network for communications within the UK and maintains excellent connections to European and US peer networks to support international collaboration. In addition to the ubiquitous JANET IP service which underpins day-to-day communications services for the entire JANET community, the network incorporates services such as JANET Lightpath which have been specifically engineered to meet the needs of the Research Community to enable National and International collaboration where projects have requirements for large amounts of dedicated network capacity.
JANET(UK) maintains direct contact with researchers within the community through discussions with representatives of projects using JANET services and participation in community activities and programmes. Engagement at this level helps JANET(UK) to understand the ways in which the research community is using or aspiring to use JANET services, and also provides us with the opportunity to discuss and consider projects or uses which may not fit the standard service portfolio.
Support for Research
Staff in the Research Support Unit within JANET(UK)'s Strategic Technologies Division are available to discuss the potential use by research projects of services such as JANET Lightpath, and more broadly to explore any topic where JANET might support activities or initiatives within the Research Community. Enquiries should be directed through the JANET Service Desk.
Items which are likely to be of particular interest to the Research community are highlighted here, though it should be noted that these are a subset of a very broad range of activities and initiatives which are described in related sections.
